Questions for the Prophets

I have begun a “mini” series at Palo Verde called “Questions for the Prophets. I intend to ask some questions of Amos, Hosea, and a few others. This past Sunday I shared my “long” sermon called What Ticks God Off? The lesson is from the prophet Amos who is as tough as nails. The text was 2.6-16.
If you want to hear a sermon by Stoned Campbell on John 3.16 called simply “For God So Loved …” it is even shorter.
At any rate I am asked from time to time if any of my lessons are on line so here are a couple of examples.
Here is a link to an article in Time about Evangelicals and Divorce that you might find interesting. I recommend Rubel Shelly’s book, Divorce & Remarriage: A Redemptive Theology as worthy of serious reflection.

Have you ever read the book that got Homer Hailey disfellowshipped from the brotherhood?
“The Divorced & Remarried Who Would Come to God”
I remember it being a stellar read from one who loved God’s word far more than most of his detractors.

Thanks for recommending Rubel’s book. It is going to be added to my list. I just read “Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Live Every Day” by Joel Osteen. I am critiquing it on my blog.

Hey Bobby,
I went by the Palo Verde website the other day just to see where you’re working and I listened to the first sermon about what ticks God off. I really love the book of Amos, and I’m sure this will be a good series. The minor prophets–though often neglected–are so intensely practical and relevant!

Here is a great question… What is the doctrine of Salvation according to the canonical prophets? Of course, answering that would probably be a good thesis or even a disertation study.

Elizabeth Achtemeier actually has a great book on preaching the minor prophets entitled “Preaching from the Minor Prophets”. I followed her outline of preaching the prophets last year on Sunday nights and it went very well. Most of the people had never heard a sermon from Micah or Habbakuk, let alone Nahum or Joel. Preaching this material is great for us preachers as well. It gives us something different to approach every week. Best of luck.

I would also recommend anything Olan Hicks has written or said on divorce and re-marriage. Olan was a lone voice in the Desert on this subject for many years.

I have appreciated Achtemeier’s work for many years and her crusade to promote not only preaching from the Hebrew Bible but GOOD preaching from the Hebrew Bible. I have here little book on Preaching from the Minor Prophets and really enjoy it.
I have done a series on Habakkuk, I just finished a five sermon series on Jonah and I have preached from Nahum … a book that is actually Good News. But I love Habakkuk!
Amos on the other hand, I have only done two sermons from that book in 15 years worth of preaching (may God forgive me).

I know what you mean about Olan Hicks. He has been alone in the wilderness so to speak for years. He has helped many folks including myself understand this terrible subject (MD&R). I have no doubt that Rubel Shelly likewise has profited from his work. I just recommended Rubel’s book because it is so well written … and he agrees with my understanding of 1 Cor 7, 🙂

It’s ashamed that Nahum is not part of the lectionary because it is a book with great value.
