Kid Rock – Only God Knows Why
Author: Bobby Valentine | Filed under: Bobby's World, Faith, MusicI am not the world’s biggest Kid Rock fan but I have always liked this song. It is a classic. It evokes a feeling that I have known on a deeper level for quite a while. WHY is a good biblical question. Only GOD knows why some things happen. Just close your eyes and listen to the lyrics. Feel the song and ignore the video. Seeking Shalom … Bobby Valentine

I understand the overall theme. However, after having listened to the lyrics and then looking them up I think I’ll not be listening anymore. The slang is vulgar.

Bobby, I’ve never heard this song before. Is this an original song by Kid Rock or someone else’s work? It sounds rather country which isn’t surprising given his friendship with Hank Williams Jr. and Gretchen Wilson. I didn’t like the electronic sound added to his voice. Some interesting confessions and revelations.

I looked up “vulgar” because that is the type of nerd I am. I know that Terry (above) was going for the 5th definition listed:
5 a: offensive in language
But I found it interesting that the 3rd definition listed was:
3 a: of or relating to the common people
I think that is exactly the point. This song relates to real, everyday people and real, everyday life.
Loved the song.

Thanks Keith. I do not know what was so terribly offensive about the song myself.
Bob I am not sure but I do think KR did write this song. It has been around for several years know but I could be wrong.

So according to the lyrics you wouldn’t mind your daughters singing this song?
Here is the link to the lyrics:

Terry,
I did not claim that Kid Rock was a “saint.” He does not make such a claim. I will comment but that does not mean I am defending KR but I do understand the song … and its use of language. The Bible does have some strong language in it too.
But the song itself is a lament. There are two words in it that you seem to be referring too. The “F” word in the song does not refer to a sex act but to people “messing” with him.
He does mention “one night stands” but again it is a lament because he cannot find real love.
The “s” word again in context refers to pain in the mans life.
I do not encourage either of those words but I like the song. It speaks powerfully and as a non-religious person Kid Rock is actually asking a very profound question. Recognize it for what it is rather than losing sight of the amazing call for help to SOMETHING. Searching for God know what … he does not know but he does recognize the emptiness … and we should affirm him in that and not stumble on his vocabulary.
Blessings,
Bobby V

Neither the F word nor the S word are profane in themselves. Both are Anglo Saxon words – basic but not offensive in the sense that some words are (which I won’t mention here).
Terry, have you heard the type of language kids use these days? (I have a 13 year old so I get to hear what kids say) It’s a rare kid who doesn’t punctuate every sentence with at least one.
Perhaps it’s a cultural thing. We Aussies are pretty basic and down to earth…
