Stoned-Campbell Shopping List

A Stoned-Campbell Disciple Shopping List …

There is one activity I can freely confess that I really do not like but has become sort of part of life when the fridg is like old Mother Hubbard’s Cupboards … EMPTY!!! That is the pilgrimage to the grocery store. Though I once worked a grocery store named Publix ages ago in Florida I do not have a clue where anything is. When I want to get exercise I go to the story because I probably walk up and down every aisle in the store a dozen times.

Because my cooking skills have simply blossomed in the last year I feel like I need to have some stuff in my kitchen. So what does a disciple struggling to make his way through the present fallen age get at Fry’s? Stuff that takes a great deal of knowledge passed on through the ages to work with. So here is a list of some items …

Coca-Puffs

Count Chocula

Coke Zero & Dr. Pepper

Packaged Salad … Just not from Dole

Apples

Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse

One “1968” Time Magazine (year I was born)

Three Pepperoni Tombstone Pizzas

Peanut Butter

For health reasons I resisted the urge to purchase a Butterfinger in the checkout line! The lady cashier was very friendly …

I got out to my little Pontiac Solstice and realized that I had forgotten an essential ingredient for my sophisticated kitchen … I needed some fat free milk for my Coca Puffs!!! I had to go back in and go through that line again … Such is life.

Good going on resisting the Butterfinger. Fruit, milk and salad is great, so’s the peanut butter, but if your cupbards are truly empty you could be making much better choices on the rest. I’ll tell you the same thing I tell my “little” brothers: just because you can eat whatever you want doesn’t mean you should. You are doing your body no favor loading up on junk. Cocoa Puffs and Count Chocula aren’t even as good as they used to be, anyway. And for the love of my daughter’s friends, who are dear sweet girls, you can get into the habit of not only stocking your cupboard better for you but also for them. Here’s a better list:

Frozen veggies: nuke what you need , save the rest for later.
    Whole wheat bread.
    Soup. Nutritious and filling.
Healthy cereal: Low sugar, low fat, high fiber. Ever tried Oat Squares?
    Rice.
    Pasta.
Chicken. Buy it frozen, cook as many pieces as you need.
Lean meat, for sandwiches or whatever.

I won’t debate about the beer with a guy who’s not mature enough to wear a helmet when he rides his motorcycle. Just hope you have at least enough sense to not combine the two.

I thought Cocoa Puffs was an essential part of a healthy diet, 😉

Veggies … I got some of those in my pre-packaged salad (not from Dole). Rice … don’t know how to make it.

But I do have to go back to the store. I have picked out a new reciepe from Rachael Ray that Talya & Rachael and I will be making soon …

Hacker-Pschorr is well within the biblical guidelines … you may have a point about the helmet though. But I have to get my helmet back from Rachael who is in Milwaukee … but perhaps that will give me an excuse to Harley of Tucson next pay day, 😉

And hey what about my apples theres some fruit.

    Love ya Jeanne,
    Bobby V

  3. The Mama Says:

I have to agree with Jeanne. You really need some good nutritious stuff. Apples are good but variety is better. Try buying small amounts of different types of fruit, apples, oranges, bananas, peaches, etc. I know about the cereal because I love Cocoa Puffs! Try granola. There are some really good ones out there. Love you brother! 🙂

  4. Greetings From Tucson Says:

You might get away with this shopping list in your 30s – but, trust me, you’ll regret it in another 10 years. Go have your triglycerides checked.

  5. Stoogelover Says:

Throw in some of those powdered donuts and you have a well balanced meal!

  6. Jeanne Says:

I *may* have a point about the helmet??? What, they don’t teach physics in Alabama? It’s really simple, Bobby: Skull soft, road hard. If you don’t have the helmet, don’t ride the motorcycle. No lame excuses.

It’s not fair of you to put your life at risk when you are the only daddy your girls will ever have. I really wasn’t kidding about the devil tempting Jesus story– I think our Savior clearly made the point with his response to Satan’s “jump off the temple” invitation that expecting God to protect you from your own willful, reckless behavior is not acceptable. In your case, are you not daring God to not let one more bad thing happen in your daughters’ lives?

It only takes one idiot not seeing you to cause an accident. I’ve already told you about my uncle and cousin in Alabama who died in a motorcycle accident. That’s not the only possible outcome. Knew a guy in Texas who lived through a motorcycle accident but sustained brain damage. Went from being a successful coach to a bag boy at a grocery store. He could at least walk and talk, after therapy, but he was definitely not the person he used to be. Ever watched _Regarding Henry_? Great Harrison Ford movie– the dad gets brain damage. Not pretty.

By the way, the preceding can be used as a self-assessment of maturity. If you can read through a lecture that sounds like your mother is talking to you, without feeling like a rebellious teenaged boy (bound and determined to do the opposite of what he’s told, just to prove no one can tell him what to do) then, as Rudyard Kipling put it, “you’ll be a man, my {brother}!”

  7. Wendy Says:

Bobby, I had best not comment. I am a bit of a health nazi. I try not to buy ANy processed food if I can. I am radical but I owe it to my family to give them the best chance at health. It’s a God thing too. I don’t like messing up the body he has blessed me with. I don’t even buy cereal – we eat rolled oats.

  8. Stoned-Campbell Disciple Says:

Jeanne you crack me up!! You are going to have to give me a hug now!

Wendy I try to avoid most processed food too. But I make allowances for Cocoa Puffs and (well not sure if peanut butter is processed food or not …)

Hacker-???? whatever. I don’t know what that is and I shop at Fry’s all the time. I have to agree with Jeanne. Listen to her; she’s a mom and mom’s know best. I would watch the canned soups tho. They have way too much salt in them. Make ur own. It’s easy. Boil some chicken parts, throw in some FRESH veggies i.e. carrots, celery, onions, potatoes and whatever else you like. Voila. Good chicken soup. Oh..and some chicken stock. Quick, easy and good for you. If you make a big pot of it, freeze some and you’re set for a while.
    Take care of you!
    Shirley

Jeanne said it all! Go Jeanne

  11. Jeanne Says:

I’ve always got a hug for you, Bobby, but it does take self-control not to wring your neck sometimes. Unfortunately, all I was armed with on Sunday was my Bible, and I’m afraid it’s even softer than your skull. So I can only “crack you up” in the figurative sense.

Speaking of Sunday, I notice you’ve got a little friend who likes to sit beside you on Sunday mornings. You get the concept of “hero-worship,” right? Little eyes are watching you and little ears are listening. Big responsibility. And he just lost his grandpa, so he doesn’t need you to get your head smashed in either.

    Love ya, brother!

  12. Stoned-Campbell Disciple Says:

All my moms, 😉 I feel warm and fuzzy inside, 😉 Love you gals.

rice cookers take the guess work out of cooking rice… and they even have microwavable kinds — easy peasy lemon squeezy!!

A nod to you on the Hefe.
