Proof we WERE in Texas

Author: Bobby Valentine | Filed under: Bobby's World, Family, Journey

Proof we were in Texas. Not much to see here … except the world’s biggest cross. Indeed the cross (not far from Amarillo) is a “mecca” for those doing the Stations of the Cross as a spiritual discipline.

We pass by that cross whenever we are heading back to Colorado to see Diana’s parents in Canon City. I had no idea it was the largest, but it certainly is impressively big. Do you know anything else about it? Like who built it and why? I’ve thought about stopping to see it, but we’re usually 12 hours into a 15 hour driving day by that time and our only goal is down the road.

  2. Frank Bellizzi Says:

Hi, Bobby. Glad you and yours made it. And it’s nice to be reminded that I’m not the only one with a pathetic dog.

That cross is at Groom, Texas. Naturally, I’ve seen it many times since moving to Amarillo. Giant crosses and images of Jesus, etc. have never done a thing for me, except make me wonder why people built them in the first place. I’ve yet to stop at Groom. Maybe the stations thing would make a difference. But with all that sheet metal, the cross looks like it was supposed to be an aircraft hanger or something. Whenever I see it, I keep waiting to hear Bart Simpson or Ned Flanders make a comment.

That cross gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I can’t imagine why people have no idea what Christianity is about.

  4. Stoned-Campbell Disciple Says:

The cross is privately owned and built from what I understand. Run by a conservative Catholic group. There is a website about it that I have bookmarked on my old computer and I will post a link asap. It has the Stations of the Cross around the big cross. I believe the cross stands 19 or 20 stories tall.

    It is an impressive sight.

    Shalom,
    Bobby Valentine
